Learn the basics of Inkscape

inkscape-logoLearn the basics of Inkscape, an open-source vector graphics program, at our workshop on Thursday, 10 March, from 7pm until 9pm.

Inkscape is free to use and provides a convenient way to design for any project that requires vector-based artwork, such as designing for the laser cutter.

This workshop will cover the basic functions, then move on to more advanced techniques, such as drawing lines and shapes, converting to paths, Bézier curves, cutting and joining paths, bitmap tracing (and why drawing it yourself could be simpler, and exporting to DXF format.

Ticket are only £5 and are available to purchase now. While computers can be provided, it would be preferred if you brought in your own laptop, with Inkscape pre-installed.

Also, while this workshop will teach you how to design for a laser cutter, this will not teach you how to use a laser cutter. Only Hackspace members are able to book an induction on a laser cutter, and only trained members can use the laser cutter. Tours will be provided on the night to introduce you to the Hackspace and explain how membership works.

“Blinky Grid” Scrolling LED workshop

This is a hands-on workshop to create a pretty darn cool scrolling LED display. Its just in time for Xmas messages and easily re-programmable for future use.

Its programmable via light (!) via a simple web interface.

Its a surface mount kit from Edinburgh Hacklab and based upon this kit by Wayne and Layne:

https://www.wayneandlayne.com/projects/blinky-smt/blinky_smt_grid_finished

Its a way of learning to solder surface mount components and get something great at the end.

It will be quite a bit of soldering, so the time taken to build it might be a bit variable. Due to this its not totally suitable for younger folk, unless they have a pretty good attention span.

This workshop is £12 including all parts and me to help guide getting it working.(Plus booking fee, sorry).

Please sign up here:

International Arduino Day 2014 – 29 March

Arduino Day BannerJoin Nottingham Hackspace to celebrate Arduino’s tenth birthday on International Ardunio Day – March 29th 2014.

If you’ve not heard of Arduino before (and we think that is unlikely), it is an open source electronics prototyping platform that pretty much kickstarted the making revolution we’re now in.  You can find more details on their site (http://arduino.cc).

On International Arduino day from 1pm we’ll be showing off Arduino projects, and you’ll be able to talk to the makers behind them, putting on mini-workshops throughout the day suitable for all abilities and exploring what Arduino can offer.  If you’ve never used Arduino before, you can come along from 11am to get your laptop up and ready to use them, and even buy a beginners kit if you want to.

From 6pm we’ll be celebrating Arduino’s 10th birthday with a party and a birthday cake (Arduino shaped, of course).

You can sign up for free tickets to the day, party, or both on eventbrite:
