Hackspace Ladies’ Night – Thursday, 12 July

Photos of women

Thursday, 12 July is the first Ladies’ Night at the Nottingham Hackspace.

Ladies’ Night is an opportunity for women to see the Nottingham Hackspace and the possibilities, from bicycle repairs, to woodworking, to laser cutting, to textiles, to art, to electronics, and much more.

Projects will be on display and there will be opportunities to tour the facilities, talk with female Hackspace members about the space, and create something of your own to take home. Snacks and drinks will also be provided.

Nottingham Hackspace believes in providing opportunities for all people to explore, create, design, invent and rebuild, and encourages women of any age, knowledge set or skill level to discover what they can create.

This event is free and starts at 7:00pm.

Partners and children are welcome, but, please, no unaccompanied men, and please watch your children at all times.

For more information, please contact Kate, or find her at one of our Open Hack Nights.

Events Workshops

DIY Solar Power Weekend

The sun on a blue sky

Nottingham Hackspace will be holding a weekend of DIY Solar Power, run by Hackspace member Dr. Matt Little of RE-Innovation.

On Saturday, 4th August, you can Build Your Own Solar Power System. At this day-long workshop, you can build a system including a 10Wp solar panel, charge regulator, voltmeter and enclosure – great for charging up batteries, phones and more.

The workshop will cover solar power technology, load assessment, resource assessment, system design, and batteries and controllers – and you won’t need previous experience with solar power or electronics!

This course will cost £60 for the full kit and instruction, and £10 if you bring your own components and just need instruction.

On Sunday, 5th August, you can Build Your Own Solar PV Panel. At this practical workshop, you will learn to cut solar PV cells, soldering, wiring and encasing for a long lifetime, building a 12v solar panel with an output of approximately 5Wp.

This course will cost £40 for the full kit and instruction, and £10 if you bring your own components and just need instruction.

Numbers are limited for both workshops, so please book your place now!

If you have any questions, please contact Matt or find him at one of our Open Hack Nights.

At the Nottingham Green Festival

Nottingham Hackspace was proud to take part in the 2012 Nottingham Green Festival, an annual celebration of everything environmentally friendly, taking place at the Arboretum on Sunday, 10th June.

Along with flyers and information about the hackspace and upcoming events, we also had Bee Hotels for sale and Hackspace member Matt Little‘s creations – a solar-powered sound system and a child-powered bubble machine.

The bubble machine was a hit with children of all ages, giving them an introduction to how pedalling a bicycle could produce enough electrical energy to run a small fan and rotating bubble wand.

The Bee Hotels, made from pieces of bamboo and cardboard tubes, were also a success. Providing shelter for solitary bees, bee hotels provide shelter and protection for the 220 species of wild bees in the UK.

If you missed your chance to see the Hackspace at the Green Festival, we will also be at the Sneinton Market on Saturday, 30th June, as part of the annual Sneinton Festival.

Events Workshops

Iron Man Arc Reactor Workshop – New Dates Added!

Iron Man Mark V Arc Reactor

After the success of the first “Build Your Own Arc Reactor” workshop on Wednesday, 13th June, Hackspace member Martin Raynsford will be holding two more on Thursday, 21st June.

As seen in Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and The Avengers, the arc reactor keeps Tony Stark alive and powers the Iron Man suit. While your arc reactor will not keep shrapnel from entering your heart or run a large mechanical suit, it will be a light-up attachable prop ready for your costuming needs.

The full kit, with instructions, training and 100g of polymorph thermoplastic, will be £17.50. You can choose a Mark 2 or Mark 5 arc reactor, or both!

Register on EventBrite now for this event as spaces are highly limited.

For more details on the Iron Man Arc Reactor, please see Martin Raynsford’s blog.

Open Craft Nights

The first and third Monday of the month is the Hackspace Open Craft Night.

This biweekly bonanza gives you the opportunity to knit, sew, build, crochet, design, cook and play. Papercraft, textiles, woodworking, painting, anything goes at the Open Craft Night. Work on that jumper you always meant to finish, learn how to sew, or just glue glitter to paper to make yourself a funky new sign.

Donations of supplies always welcome, and if you’re in need of help, there might be someone who can help you as well.

It starts at 7, but feel free to come in and leave at any time – it’s an Open Craft Night for you!
