Wednesday Night is Members’ Night
Your very first evening at the Hackspace will probably be on a tour, and they all take place on Wednesdays at 7pm. (You can sign up for a tour here.) As you’re going around, you’ll notice a number of things going on as it’s also our most popular social night.
There are a number of events on Wednesdays, in no particular order:
Radiospace is our radio club who meet every second Wednesday of the month. The projects we’ve gotten into have been a mixture of things that have gone completely over my head, to really easy bits to get into. Lately the Hackspace has made the Nottingham Meshtastic network much sturdier by many of us getting overexcited about getting nodes. We even have some people who are licensed to help newbies to speak on public radios for their first time!
Coffee and CAD happens on the third Wednesday of each month and is quite popular! Conversations here cover all aspects of computer aided design, from dipping into Blender (although I’m aware that there’s a large Fusion 360 faction at the space too) to the actual 3D printing or CNC routing of a design. I’m not entirely sure if anyone has coffee that late in the evening. You may have to check with them on Discord.
The Wiki CleanUp Project might be our loosest social event. On the third Wednesday of each month, alongside the CAD folks, I can be found editing the wiki. There are a few of us that carefully tend to it. If you’re interested in learning the arcane wiki syntax, you’re welcome along to the Studio where I’ll likely be trying to fix a wiki template.
Check availability on the Discord, but our combat robotics (think Robot Wars!) community is quite active too. If you’re after an electronic engineering project to jump into, building ant-weight robots is quite an easy one to get into and you can take it as far as you like. There are a few builders who are always eager to help. Some people at the Space attend battles across the country!
Another Wednesday meet up group that’s always eager to lure new people into the hobby is the war gaming folk, who can be found most weeks. Whether you’ve got your own armies ready to be dug out of a cupboard somewhere or if you’d like to play with a borrowed set, the tabletop team are ready to roll.
Of course, lots of people just turn up on a Wednesday because it’s a busy, social evening. Even if you’re not interested in any of the above, it’s often nice to have other people around whilst you’re doing your own thing. If you’re curious how to use the pillar drill or industrial sewing machine, there will likely be someone around who can teach you.
Happy hacking and I hope to see you next Wednesday!
