Maker Faire UK 2011 Day 1
It’s the end of day one in Newcastle, and we’re in the pub with guys from hackspaces in Northhampton, London, Leeds and Dublin.
Its been a fantastic day walking around the Maker Faire, meeting people from all the other UK Hackerspaces and of course all the other makers.
Arriving at the Life centre via the makers entrance, we were shown upstairs to the Hackerspace area, where the London Hackspace people were all ready encamped and busy hacking away.
The stands were all very diverse, and among many other things included Make offering flashing LED badge kits next to a space where people could learn to solder, motorised mountain bikes, musical tesla coils, giant etch-a-sketches, glowing couture, papercraft gear hearts, fundraising charity Daleks, and tuition in constructing “survival cups”; simple bits of polystyrene that can show you north and south, day or night. Northackton covered their stand with an enormous three dimensional cardboard spider.
Some of the stands were held by commercial companies, some by hackspaces, and some people there simply had projects they wanted to show off and gauge interest on
We’ve hardly had time to look at everything there, and are going back tomorrow. Pictures and videos to come.
