Announcing Nottingham Hackspace 2.0

Last week we were told that we’d need to leave the Old Police Station by the end of April. Since then we’ve been working with The Art Organisation to arrange new accommodation for Nottingham Hackspace.

Yesterday we were pleased to make a new arrangement with The Art Organisation to move in to the basement level of the Hopkinson Gallery also on Station Street.

We’ve got some early pictures of the basement (remember it needs work) here on Dominic’s Flickr.

On the Open Hack Night 6th April 2011 (tonight) there will be a chance for you to look round the basement at The Art Org. We hope to bring you a schedule for the work that needs to be completed and details of the dates of the move.

We will be having a Hackspace warming party and official Nottingham Hackspace 2.0 opening on a Sunday in May (watch this space for more information).

Over the next month we’ll still be looking for new members and organising some workshops. We are currently planning a “Hackspace Wearables” workshop to include how to do “on the cheap” screen printing, working with EL Wire and Lillypad Arduino also a chainmail workshop and Atari-Punk-Console workshop…

So a lot happening. We can’t wait to see you at the new Nottingham Hackspace soon!

Nottingham Hackspace to leave the Old Police Station

Early on Wednesday morning 30th March 2011 we had a call from The Art Organ about their tenancy on the Old Police Station 3 – 9 Station Street in Nottingham.

Unfortunately the 1st floor tenants have to vacate by the 30th April 2011. The 2nd floor will vacate by the 30th May 2011.

The Art Org are still committed to finding Nottingham Hackspace some space with in it’s buildings and we hope to have news very soon about our new rooms! Our first priority is to ensure we have a place to hack, that is open to our members when they need it. Our second priority will be to try and stay as close to Nottingham station as we can.

In the meantime it’s Hacking as usual at the Old Police Station and we’ll continue to have Open Hack Night on Wednesdays!

Letter from The Art Org

Dear Studio Holder,

It is with great regret that yesterday we recieved information from the Landlord of 3 – 9 Station Street that he will be drawing our lease to a close much earlier than expected. This is due to the impending need to upgrade this building.

Unfortunately this has come with some deadlines for each floor of the building, affecting some much sooner than others due to the schedule of work the landlord has planned.

Floor 1 to be vacated by 30th April 2011
Floor 2 to be vacated by 31st May 2011

Ideally we will look to vacate all studios by the 30th April as to not incur any further costs or fees for this building.

These dates are not negotiable and the landlord is within his right to give 4 weeks’ notice as underserved as this may seem. For most people there are some other options and we will help to relocate where possible.

We want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support with the project in 3 – 9 over the last number of years and we are dissapointed that this building has to come to an end, after so much tijme and effort has been spent on it. As you know we had much bigger plans for the project within this building and we did not anticipate having to vacate so soon.

Kindest regards

Liam & Rob

Kinect Controlled Tesla Coils at Maker Faire UK

Towards the end of day 2 at Maker Faire our friends from the London Hackspace excited told us to head to the Tesla Coils to see something really exciting…

We had an awesome time at Maker Faire in Newcastle and we’re already anticipating an amazing Maker Faire 2012 where-ever it might be.

We’d particularly like to thanks Graham from O’Reilly UK who kept us in flashing LED badges, Jane & James from SUGRU, Jimmy & Mitch, Aaron & Anna at Oomlout, Jaake & Hannah from Instrucatbles,Rob & the boys from TOG, Tree (it’s a GO GO GO) and especially our very good friends from NortHackton. We had a blast at the Hackspaces pissup meetup!

Maker Faire UK 2011 Day 1

It’s the end of day one in Newcastle, and we’re in the pub with guys from hackspaces in Northhampton, London, Leeds and Dublin.

Its been a fantastic day walking around the Maker Faire, meeting people from all the other UK Hackerspaces and of course all the other makers.

Arriving at the Life centre via the makers entrance, we were shown upstairs to the Hackerspace area, where the London Hackspace people were all ready encamped and busy hacking away.

The stands were all very diverse, and among many other things included Make offering flashing LED badge kits next to a space where people could learn to solder, motorised mountain bikes, musical tesla coils, giant etch-a-sketches, glowing couture, papercraft gear hearts, fundraising charity Daleks, and tuition in constructing “survival cups”; simple bits of polystyrene that can show you north and south, day or night. Northackton covered their stand with an enormous three dimensional cardboard spider.

Some of the stands were held by commercial companies, some by hackspaces, and some people there simply had projects they wanted to show off and gauge interest on

We’ve hardly had time to look at everything there, and are going back tomorrow. Pictures and videos to come.

See you at Maker Faire!

Members of Nottinghack are travelling to Newcastle on Friday to visit Maker Faire UK this weekend 12/13th March 2011.

Hackers from all over the UK (and the world) will gather at the Life Science Centre for the 3rd UK Maker Faire that looks set to be the busiest one yet.

On Friday 11th in the evening there will be a hackspace pub  meetup as well as a BioHackers diner on the Saturday night and Qusar battle in South Shields.

Do try and find us, we’ll be evangelising about Hackerspaces as well as hacking in the dedicated “hackers” area (probably on the Mezzanine floor with Mitch Altman).

See you there. Follow live tweets on @HSNOTTS

LED Matrix

LED MatrixEverybody loves LED and hackers are no exception!

At our first open hack day on Saturday, Michael dropped off an LED matrix unit normally used in motorway signs.  16 x 16 bi-colour LEDs – 256 green-yellow and red flashing lights!

In fact, he dropped off eight units!  2056 LEDs!

Each unit has two identical connectors, IN and OUT, which allow them to be chained together and controlled as one.  Each unit still requires it’s one power supply.

The possibilities of these are pretty exciting!  My electronics-fu is nowhere near good enough to work out how to use them, but I have created a wiki page and uploaded the datasheet and a few different pictures.

Get playing!

Opening the Nottinghack Cupcake at LVL1 Louisville

You have to check this awesome video of the official cupcake opening. Comments indicate that the cupcake was “surprisingly unstale” and had condensation on it after taking about 2 weeks to get to LVL1 Hackerspace in Louisville Kentucky USA.

The whole Cupcake Challenge has been a great success and we hope to have more involvement with LVL1 in the future!
